To Say the Nembutsu and a Lotus（念仏と蓮の花）

　或る人が小さな声でなんまんだぶと言うことは、社会や歴史の上で起こっているその他のさまざまな出来事と比べれば、世界の現実に何ものをももたらさない、起こったか起こらないか分からないようなささやかなことに見えましょう。けれど、実はそれは他の何ものにも代えられない大きな出来事なのだと仏さまはおっしゃるのです。お念仏こそ実に宇宙大の事件なのです。たとえばお経の中には、「此界の一人仏を念ずれば、西方に一蓮の生ずる有り」という言葉があります。この世界で一人の人がお念仏したらお浄土で蓮の花が一輪咲くと説かれています。お浄土に一輪の蓮が生ずるということは、この世界の根底に大きな変化がもたらされるということです。なまんだぶの一声において浄土が荘厳されるということが起こるのです。如来の大行であるお念仏の不思議な功徳であります。それは我のはからいによる出来事じゃないからです。お念仏とは、私達の現世の時間に出現している永遠なるいのちの世界の出来事なのです。（大峯　顕）(8)　　　　　　　　
Compared with the other various occurrences happening in society and in history,
a person's saying “Namu-amida-butsu”in a low voice may seem to be a small event
which brings about nothing to the world's reality and which is not be known to have
occurred or not. The Buddha, however, says that actually, it is a great event which
cannot be replaceable with anything else. It is to say the nembutsu that is a serious
matter the size of the universe. In the sutra, for example, you can find the
expression : “When, in this land, a person says the Name of the Buddha, in the
western land, a lotus rises.”: It says in the sutra that when a person says
“Namu-amida-butsu”in this world, a lotus blooms in the Pure Land. The rising of
a lotus in the Pure Land means that a great change is produced in the root of this
world. A fact rises that the Pure Land is adorned by one voice of saying
“Namu-amida-butsu.” This is not because of the event by self's calculation,
but because of mysterious virtues of the nembutsu caused by the Buddha's great
practice. To practice the nembutsu is the very event in the world of the eternal life
which is appearing now in our present world.

　私にとってこれまで、「南無阿弥陀仏」の念仏の偉力が、これほど力強く鮮明に感じられる文章があったでしょうか。　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　
　仏さまは言っておられます。「この世で一人の人が念仏すれば、浄土に一輪の蓮の花が開く」と。もう、これだけで気圧（圧倒）されてしまいます。　　　　　　　　
　さらに大峯先生は、「念仏は宇宙大の事件である」「念仏の一声で浄土が荘厳される」「念仏とは、私たちの現世の時間に出現している永遠なるいのちの世界の出来事である」等と、念仏のもたらす不可思議な力と功徳について書いておられます。　　　　　　　　　　　　
　それもその筈、仏さまの大行ですもの。不思議、不思議というより他にありません。　　
　人はよく、山や川や海など自然の雄大な景色、そしてスポーツや芸術、学問、仕事等、さまざまな分野で一生懸命物事に打ち込む人の姿を見たり聞いたり感じたりして、それらから「勇気をもらう」とか「元気をもらう」等と、感動の言葉を発します。　　　　　　　
　私は「一声の念仏で、浄土に一輪の蓮の花が咲く」という言葉に他の何ものにも代え難い、力と勇気と元気をもらいます。
